Preserved by English Heritage, Totnes castle is one of the best-preserved Norman shell keeps and offers fabulous views over the River Dart. The once great surrounding ditch is today filled with cottages and gardens. It is reputed to be one of the best-preserved shell keeps in the country.
The motte is made of layers of earth, rock and clay compacted into a natural rock mound, and likely to have been built about 1100. The castle itself would probably have been capped by a wooden tower, but the early 13th century saw an additional stone shell keep added to the top of the motte.
Facilities include shop, picnic area and parking.
