This busy little town in east Sussex has become something of a tarvel mecca ever since Gatwick Airport opened on the fringes of Crawley in the 1940s. That said, the town has been something of a travel-hub. The town’s location on the main road gave rise to dozens of coaching-inns and it expanded further with the rail connections in the mid-Victorian period. The site on which Gatwick stands today was home to Gatwick Manor, close to the village of Lowfield Heath.
