The 35-mile drive from Shepton Mallet might rule this out for more exploring the Mendips and the Caves at any lengths but for day trips it’s a convenient and affordable option. Located on the A37.
The Highwayman Inn is a pub-with-rooms option more suitable for overnight stays in the area than as a base for extended trips to the Mendips. The 14 guest rooms are a basic but adequate affair with a fair mixture of single, double and twins rooms available. It’s strength lie ostensibly in the food and drinks area where guests can look forward to a first-class assortment of cask and craft ales and traditional pub cuisine. Favourites with regulars include the Steak and Guinness Pie, the Cod in beer batter and the special Highwayman Burger. There’s also a creative range of sandwiches on offer including Cajun chicken and roasted Mediterranean vegetables. These are likely to change from time to time, so please bear this in mind when booking for the sandwiches alone!
There’s bags of period character here from exposed oak beams, stone walls and cosy open fires and the building itself dates back to the 16th Century (check out the magnificent Tudor carriage in the car-park). The Highwayman Inn comes ighly recommended by the Good Beer Guide and Good Food Guide.
The ancient town of Glastonbury is just a 20 minute drive along the A361, whilst the A371 will take you all the way to Wookey Hole Caves and Cheddar Gorge – R4U
