Hotel Gleneagles

As strange as it may now seem the Hotel Gleneagles in Torquay provided the inspiration for the classic 1970s sit-com, Fawlty Towers. John Cleese and the Monty Python team stayed at the Gleneagles in 1972, basing it on the properties erratic manager at the time. Much of course has changed since then and after many years of refurbishment and the exchange of several owners, the Gleneagles Hotel is now attracting attention for all the right reasons. Today it under the watchful eye of Best Western who have transformed what was already a good looking and reputable hotel into something rather special.

Although modern and progressive, the hotel is based around an old Victorian property – a far cry from the bijou, boutique style hotel you see today. Located in the chic Torquay district of Wellswood, overlooking Lyme Bay, the Gleneagles offers 41 stylish bedrooms, some with ocean views and all with private balconies. A glorious outdoor swimming pool provides the ideal retreat in summer when the promise of a gourmet dinner in the poolside restaurant is likely to be your only distracting concern. And after dinner guests can unwind over a cocktail or chilled glass of champagne in the stylish lounge bar, conceived by the interior designers Mirco Mirco.

By day the conservatory offers stunning views of the Devon coastline and blue waters of Torbay. Torquay and the immediate area enjoys several first class beaches including Abbey Sands, Preston Sands Paignton Beach and Goodrington Sands - home to Quaywest Waterpark - R4U
