Currently styled and re-branded as the 'Third Liver Bird' heaven knows why given the relative obscurity of long-since cancelled British Sit Com the Malmaison ranks as one of the coolest hotels in the district. It's a stylish boutique affair with exposed brick walls, plenty of dull stainless steel, and the kind of lush, plush colour-schemes last seen in a French boudoir. It's pretty gorgeous, to be fair, and this general ‘jouissance’ is matched by a first-class range of facilities including air-conditioning, moody adjustable lighting, CD players and 24-hour 'vroom' service. The in-rooms nibble tray is a nice touch and the Gymtonic Health suite more than hits the spot with a small but adaptable range of equipment.

The Malmasion Brasserie must rank as one of the savviest restaurants in Liverpool and is complemented by a good selection of wines and rich coffees. Make mine a Mal.
