Oak House

3 star rating The Square

Axbridge (Mendip Hills) Somerset BS26 2AP

The Oakhouse Hotel adds a bit of culinary glamour to your stay in the Mendips. The caves, Axbridge town centre and all those stunning cliff top walks are just up the road.

The £60 price-tag put on a standard twin room is reasonably cheap for this neck of the woods, making this a capable and pretty adaptable little bed & breakfast option. It’s pretty small compared to its main local rivals, The Webbington Hotel and Ston Easton Park but the nine rooms currently on offer have a modish, boutique character quite unlike the average restaurant-with-rooms package. It’s also difficult to beat in terms of location. The Cliffs and Caves of Cheddar Gorge are just 30 minutes walk away and Cheddar Reservoir is practically on your doorstep. Axbridge and the Sedgemoor district is a pretty little town in itself and there are plenty of Grade II Listed buildings to appreciate and explore.

All guest rooms are en suite and come equipped with TV/DVD Players and wi-fi Internet. The decor is smart yet traditional and there are some lovely boutique touches to the furnishings and fabrics.

The food on offer is of a very high standard indeed. Head Chef Newstead Sayer and the team offer top quality seasonal ingredients, featuring a high proportion of local, fresh and organic products. The high, open beam ceiling, exposed stone walls and flagstone floors also give the dining experience a distinctive rustic flavour – R4U
