The hotel is located on the A4 close to Junction 12 of the M4, providing easy access to Reading and Newbury. We are also close to the business ares of Theale, Thatcham, Beenham, Sulhamstead and Aldermaston. Heathrow Airport is 40 minutes drive straight along the M4 and you can be in Central London in just over an hour. (Guests please note that the restaurant is currently closed on Friday and Saturday evenings.) The Kennet and Avon Canal and Visitor Centre are nearby along with some very attractive countryside walks. For the culture lover, Windsor Castle, Highclere Castle, Stratfield Saye and Mapledurham House are all easily reached and Newbury Racecourse is located midway between the hotel and Newbury itself. For a great day's shopping head for the Oracle Shopping Centre in Reading which, along with the Riverside Dining and Entertainment Complex, is considered one of the best in the United Kingdom.

Work on the Metropole was started in 1900 and the hotel opened its doors in 1904. It was built by the sons of John Cory and Sons, ship owners from Cardiff. It was built as much for the holidays of the extended family as for a commercial enterprise. The total cost including fitting was 12,000. The hotel was originally called The South Western, to benefit from the planned railway development but it was Southern Railways who eventually brought the trains to Padstow. This prompted the change of name. Our Met Cafe Bar is the ideal place for a light lunch, afternoon tea or evening meal, informal and great value with the best view in Padstow.
