This pleasant Berkshire town propsered with the advent of the Great Western Railway in the 1800s and is located at the confluence of the River Kennet and River Thames. Although primarily a commercial destination there are some worthy local attractions. Basildon Park (owned by the National Trust) is a stunning Palladian mansion house built in the 1700s, whilst the Cliveden estate in nearby Taplow is home to some spectacular gardens. The Reading Music Festival takes place annually at Little Johns Farm on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the August bank holiday weekend and attracts some of the biggest names in popular music.
