Local History
A Stone Age Settlement originally, Stirling has enjoyed its strategic status since Roman times. Many of Scotland’s major battles taking place around its steep, impervious embankment. Scotland's most famous battle with England took place at the Stirling Bridge in 1297 and at the nearby village of Bannockburn in 1314. The fortifications also played a strategic military role during the 18th century Jacobite Risings and in January 1746, the army of Bonnie Prince Charlie seized control of the town but failed to take the Castle. Today the city is a busy and cosmopolitan centre popular with young internationals and UK tourists alike.
