If you have travelled to Britain with the expressed purpose of seeing something ancient, then they don't get much older than this. It was here at Gough's Cave that Britain's oldest human skeleton, Cheddar Man was found (which you can view at the Natural History Museum in London). A replica of the skeleton can be seen at the nearby 'Cheddar Man and the Cannibals' exhibition in Cheddar Village. The Caves here need little introduction. Gough Cave is a labyrinth of secret chambers and incredible vistas produced by naturally occurring stalagmites and stalactites, that which create all manner of magical illusions. Cox's Cave, on the otherhand, is a fairytale sanctuary of stunning calcite sculptures and otherworldly fountains.

This ancient glacial region has no shortage of things to do. Visitors can look forward to rides on the Gorge open-top bus tour, Crystal Quest, rock-climbing, cave abseiling and Cheddar Gorge climbs.

Whatever the British weather throws at you, this is a great site for a long weekend or adventure holiday, with plenty to do for the entire family. For the less active amongst you check out the 'Museum of Prehistory' which tells the story of man's struggle during the last Ice Age. And for those with plenty of fuel in their tank there's a stunning 3-mile cliff-top Cheddar Gorge walk that will introduce you to the landscape created by those same glaciers and melt waters. See the Cheddar Gorge website for more details. Room4U enjoys a variety of last-minute unsold rooms. This means we can share BIG discounts on Cheddar Gorge hotels and cheap bed & breakfast lodgings around the Mendips.
